Introducing Professor Dan Burke

Dan Burke, Emeritus Professor of Pharmaceutical Metabolism, is Head of Research for Salvestrol Natural Products Ltd in Syston, Leicester, England. He gained a First in Biochemistry from London University and a PhD in Drug Metabolism from the University of Surrey.

Professor Burke has authored over 200 published research articles and is an expert on the metabolism, toxicity and interaction of drugs, environmental chemicals and natural compounds.

His specialism is the Cytochrome P450, or CYP, enzyme system which he has researched in everything from humans to citrus fruits.


His research and teaching has covered the causes, detection, prevention and treatment of Cancer and includes nearly 20 years in the science faculty of Aberdeen University Medical School.


In the 1970s Professor Burke invented a set of biochemical tests that are used worldwide in the bio-monitoring of environmental pollution and by the pharmaceutical industry in drug discovery and development (the EROD Assays).


In the 1990s he and his research group discovered the CYP1B1 enzyme which was intrinsic to cancer cells but absent from healthy tissue. This discovery sparked worldwide research into new methods of cancer detection, prevention and treatment.
